We
have both registered white, and colored Angora goats. The Angora goat
originated in the district of Angora in Asia Minor and dates back prior to early
biblical history. Mention of the use of mohair can be documented at the
time of Moses, which would be between 1571 and 1451 B.C. The first Angoras
were shipped to the United States around 1849. They attracted a great deal
of attention and were in so much demand that they sold for exorbitant prices! Today, Texas is the center of mohair production,
supplying over 90% of the nation's mohair supply. We shear our goats twice a year, in
February or March, and again in August or September. This is dependant on
wet weather. Angoras will grow about 3/4 to an inch of fiber a month. Our fleeces are well skirted and
are graded as follows:
1. Kid mohair 2. First clip yearling mohair 3. Second clip yearling mohair 4. Adult mohair 5. All groups separated by color
By
using sound selection and breeding practices, our goats have maintained their fine hair throughout adulthood. I sell raw fleece, washed fleece, rovings for spinning, hand painted rovings, and finished handspun yarns. I love to have a variety of finished items
as well, such as hats, mittens, gloves, coat scarves, socks, shawls, and lots of other items.
Breeding the goats has been one of the highlights of our lives. Absolutely
nothing is more adorable than a baby Angora! However, we are no longer
breeding goats, and have retained a few pets and fiber producers that will
provide fibers for my own use and some to sell. So our personal mohair
offerings will be on a very limited basis. Goats have wonderful personalities and are quite endearing. There is never a dull moment out in the barnyard at our farm!
