Texas has a wealth of wildlife, and we are constantly being vigilant in protecting our herd from predators.  Coyotes, foxes, bobcats, cougars, eagles, red wolves and domestic dogs are among the greatest threats.  Any one, can efficiently kill your animals.  Since there is no such thing as a predator proof fence, we do our best at being predator "deterrent".  Our perimeter fencing consists of woven wire, and barbed wire, and some of the pens have the added protection of electric netting. I do not like the use of snares, traps, or poisons, so we look to alternative means.
The most prevalent predator in our area is the coyote.  They are extremely curious and adaptable opportunistic carnivores.    They will adapt to YOUR schedule.  However, our most feared predator is the domestic lap-dog next door; that is allowed to run, or in inadequate fencing.  They can do far more damage, by running, chasing, maiming, and tearing your herd apart.  Deaths occur for days afterward, due to injuries and shock.  This is a PEOPLE problem and needs to be dealt with directly.
The best predator management you can use is through the use of livestock guardian animals.  We use an Anatolian Shepherd, Moses, a neutered male llama, Murphy, and a great old horse named Doc that has an innate dislike for the
Canis species.
Many studies have been done on the use of livestock guardians, and the results have been overwhelmingly strong.  If you have animals that are at risk for predation, please protect them!
We have had very good luck with our group.  Each type of livestock guardian has their particular pros and cons, and their own kind of maintenance schedule.  Whatever type of guardian you choose, you need to learn all about that animal, and their management.  For example, never use a male llama with goats and sheep unless he has been neutered.  Also, not every dog, horse, or llama will make a good guardian.  It takes attention to breeding, selection and training to have a successful guardian.
Remember, livestock guardians are hard working animals, and need to be on a good plane of nutrition, that is specific to their breed.  They also need to be current on all immunizations and wormings.

Most predators can be determined by their method of kill, how they eat, and the tracks they leave behind.
