Summer Natural Dye Pot Project
Our first dye pot of the summer was our Osage Orange shavings dye pot.  We dyed a lot of varied yarns, each person bringing in 3 ounces of yarn and/or fibers.  We used alum mordants, and gauged our pots at about 4 ounces of dry weight shavings to about a pound of fiber.  The shavings were extracted twice then set over night.  Fibers went into the pot at the Spin IN and were set just below a simmer for an hour.  We got lovely deep colors!  See for yourself, click on the thumbnail below:

Our next dye will be the reds - madder and cochineal!  This will be at the next Spin In, Saturday, September 13.  Come join the fun!
Indigo - Oct 11 Spin In
Walnut - Nov 8 Spin In

Just like everyone else, I have been reading and studying all about blending boards since Spin-Off premiered them in their magazine.  I love spinning beautiful woolen yarns, and this is a fabulous tool for making those big rolags from just about anything in your stash.  I've looked at many brands, and THIS is the one I want to carry.  Here are my reasons:
1.  LARGE blending area of 12 inches x 12 inches
2.  108 ppi (points per square inch) carding cloth, able to handle the finest of fibers very well
3.  Great fitting carry handle, blending brush and two dowel rods for drafting and removing the rolags.
4.  Nice size rotating keel, very adjustable
It is selling for $175, and if you have been looking around, it is a good bargain for what you are getting.  Thumbnail picture below, so click on it for an enlarged view.

DECEMBER 2012 - BOLGA BASKETS!  These beautiful baskets are hand woven in Ghana, West Africa, where they are used as a type of shopping or market basket to carry everything you can imagine. The material is a native long grass that is first harvested and cured, then dyed, and finally tightly woven into the basket. The construction is excellent and very sturdy. The dyed goat skin wraps provide both stability and ease of use in addition to being aesthetically pleasing.  They are perfect for carrying all your fibery projects, due to their close and sturdy construction.  Each bag purchased, donates back to support these wonderful artisans!
